Situated just off West Street, this North Korean themed bar gets its name from the Demilitarized Zone between South and North Korea and is usually the life of the party in Yangshuo. It’s open 7 days a week, from 12 pm until the early hours of the morning. Here you’ll be able to sample two different kinds of North Korean beers, as well as an array of other alcohol you may be craving. In addition to the average Whiskey, Gin and other spirits on offer, the bar also offers homemade infused Baijiu shots for 10CNY (roughly 1.5USD) in various flavours. Perfect for those hot and humid days in Yangshuo, DMZ is the place to go for a cool pint of draft beer. Come during Happy Hour (7-12pm) and you can enjoy a pint for just 20 CNY. Choose to sit inside and enjoy the Airconditioning or enjoy a cool evening sitting out next to the river outside.
There are also various signature cocktails on offer, as well as lots of deals on alcohol & soft drinks, particularly of a weekend.
The bar is run and owned by a British guy and is frequented by various nationalities on a daily basis. Come here a few nights a week and you’re bound to meet familiar faces as it is one of the main hangouts for local expats and tourists in Yangshuo for a long period of time. This makes it the perfect place if you’re new here and want to meet some like-minded people and get some tips from the local veterans.
Apart from good drinks and good company, the bar also boasts a Foosball (table football) table that is certainly made the most of on a daily basis. Whether you’re a beginner wanting to try it out or an expert, there will surely be someone willing to take up the challenge. It also has a darts table, music, and karaoke.
Other services the bar offers is scooter rental, the ability to purchase North Korean money, and a chance to get a bit of an insight into North Korea from people who’ve been there first hand. DMZ doesn’t offer food, however, there are plenty of places across the street where you can get some food to bring to the bar, or get food delivered here from McDonald’s or one of the international restaurants in the area.
DMZ is located 2 minutes walk away from other popular bars and clubs such as Kaya, Mojo’s, and Bad Panda so it’s perfect both for a drink or two, and a big night out. The locals will surely be happy to show you around the other bars and clubs if you haven’t yet had the chance.
The bar recently helped organise and took part in Yangshuo’s first food & drink tour, including restaurants and bars around the area. The tour hit its extremely successful finale at the DMZ, seeing over 80 guests packing out the bar, and indeed the rest of the street.
With its great alcohol, good company, and wide range of activities, the DMZ is certainly not to miss out on during your trip to Yangshuo. But just remember – don’t leave it until your last night! It will certainly leave you wanting more.
