OK kids, ready to get with the fun facts? Port Vila is the capital city of Vanuatu, formerly known as the New Hebrides. The New Hebrides was formerly what is known in international law as a condominium. This where two countries share sovereignty of a colony, in this case, England and France, which means that when you visit Vanuatu, you will see things in English, French, and amusing English pidgin.
History lesson over!
Vanuatu is not only next to the Solomon Islands, but links up with Port Moresby in PNG, and thus to Manila, or Singapore on the 5 weekly flights (and this works for the YPT Least Visited Countries Tour)
What’s the basic facts
Its the capital of Vanuatu
They use their own currency, which is roughly 100 to 1 with the US$
Its considered to be very safe
Relaxed, but expensive place to hang out
Port Vila is a cruise ship hub, it can get very busy during the day here!
What do you do in Port Vila on the least visited countries tour?
We do not visit Vanuatu on the Least Visited Countries Tour but are exploring an extension to 2018/19. If we don’t add it flights here are under $100 from Honiara to Port Vila, which makes it a fairly viable place to tick off.
Also links to both the Manila and Singapore flights via PNG (with no need to stop in Honiara).
Can I go explore Port Vila by myself?
It has a bus/taxi type service servicing the whole of the city/island, as well as ferries to various places. Prices seem to be arbitrary, but not that expensive.
Is it worth staying here longer?
I stayed here for 3 nights after the tour, and if you book enough in advance you can stay on tropical little islands for pretty cheap. Beer and food are expensive but well worth a look.
When is your next tour to Port Vila?
Young Pioneer Tours are currently exploring an extension to our 2018/19 Least Visited Countries Tour, but even if we do not add it, very easy to tag on yourself (as two of us did this year)
