You like adventure travel? You like running?
Here’s YPT’s top 5 crazy marathons for those who are looking for a little bit more than your Berlin, New York City or Sydney marathons.
5. Kazbegi Marathon – Georgia, September
The Caucasus has always had a special place in YPT’s hearts and so where better to start than the biggest and best Caucasus marathon. Starting in Kazbegi, Georgia, the race takes you through mountains up to over 2000 metres with stunning views in one of the world’s least known beautiful parts of the world.
4. Mt Everest Marathon – Nepal, May
Starting fairly close to Everest Base Camp on the Nepali side this race is fairly self-explanatory – run 42kms while staving off altitude sickness, hypothermia and dodging yaks. It’s not one for the faint-hearted but at least you start high and run down.
3. Petra Desert Marathon – Jordan, September
If deserts and ancient history is your thing then this is the marathon for you. The ancient city of Petra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that remained unknown to westerners until the 19th century. Hidden deep in the desert of Jordan the route of this marathon goes through deserts and mountains, past ancient rock-cut architecture and is the true way to combine history and running.
2. Great Wall Marathon – China, May
Basically, this is the best way to combine travel to world-famous destinations and running. Not only does this run take you through Chinese towns and picturesque villages in the Tianjin city municipal area but then goes along 6ks of the actual Great Wall, complete with steps, a lot of up and down, and the infamous Goat Track section.
Pyongyang Marathon – North Korea, April
In YPT’s opinion there’s not really anything that comes close to the Mangyongdae Prize International Marathon held every April in Pyongyang, North Korea. It’s AIMS certified (the Association of International Marathon and Distances Races) and has been running since 2014.
But the main draw is that you start and finish in the packed 70,000 seater Kim Il Sung Stadium and there’s not much that is better than finishing a marathon and feeling like you’ve just won a gold medal at the Olympics.
If you want to sign up to run in the Pyongyang Marathon in April 2018 then you need to sign up before the 1st of March, 2018.

Honourable mention – Man versus Horse Marathon, Wales, June
Think you can beat a horse in a marathon? Well, although the horse species beat the human species in the first 24 years that this marathon was run, an actual human did beat a horse eventually in 2014. Want to know who thought up this crazy race? Well, it was, of course, two Welshmen and the marathon takes place annually in Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales.
