Mary’s Hotel Review
Tarawa of Kiribati was to be our second to the last stop on the Young Pioneer Tours Least Visited Countries Tour. From afar the country looked beautiful, and we wanted to make sure the hotel was right. Mary’s ticked most of the boxes we wanted regarding budget, location, and what was needed.
Why Mary’s Hotel (Tarawa)?
Online reviews were pretty good, they offered airport pickup service, promptly answered E-mails (that’s a big thing in these parts), and our tour guide was familiar where it was.
What are Mary’s Hotel rooms like?
Big and spacious, with a front and back door, as well as sofas and a big bed, but weirdly no TV, which I miss when I am in an English speaking country (ish).
The shared rooms, which were used by two of our guests were not great, having a big and a very small bed pretty much next to each other.
Half of the rooms face the main road, which is pretty noisy on occasion.
Price was around $100, which is about standard and expected in Tarawa, and value for money wise, we could not complain.
Mary’s Hotel (Tarawa) Location
About 20-30 minutes from the main airport and just before the main road to the part of Tarawa where the beaches, bars, restaurants, and WW2 stuff are located.
A few shops nearby, the national “Stadium”, and a cool little local bar.
Mary’s Hotel (Tarawa) – Facilities
Alas, most of their facilities were only theoretical to us:
- Tour services were not offered to us.
- Airport pickup service
- Breakfast but they did not open
- A restaurant which served only half of their menu.
- A nonexistent bar
Around the hotel, there was a range of shops to buy bits and bobs, a larger supermarket, as well as a very local bar that had beers for AUD $3.50 and karaoke with friendly patrons.
Overall I was satisfied with Mary’s Hotel (Tarawa), it did everything we needed to be done in Kiribati, and there was nothing that they particularly did wrong. Having seen some other resorts with similar rates in North Tarawa when we went on our day trip, but with a slightly more lively scene, I would be looking to try a different hotel there on the next Least Visited Countries Tour in Tarawa, Kiribati.
That being said if Mary’s Hotel (Tarawa) is available, and at your budget then it’s worth staying there. An overall, a very neutral review of Mary’s Hotel (Tarawa)!
