Review of City Hostel (Skopje)
Young Pioneer Tours visit Macedonia once a year as part of our legendary Eurasian Adventure Tour. I was planning to travel to Macedonia as part of a research project for Pioneer Media, and so decided to stay in my favourite hostel in Skopje City Hostel.
Why the City Hostel (Skopje)?
8 years ago when I first started arranging tours to Macedonia, there were very few options for places to stay in Skopje, with it being pretty much high-end hotels or City Hostel. After staying there that first time 8 years ago, I pretty much fell in love with the place. It is run by an eccentric old Slav dude and his family, who are all kind and friendly almost to a fault.
You can find the City Hostel on hostelworld.com, but to get the best prices contact them directly and negotiate with them.
You pay as little as $8 a night for dorm beds, with private rooms being a little more.
What are the City Hostel Skopje rooms like?
Eclectic with there being 4 bedroom dorms, private twin rooms, a basement style twin and even a private apartment available depending on your budget.
City Hostel Skopje Location
1 km from the bus station, and an easy 20-minute walk from the centre of Skopje and thus all the main tourist fare.
A taxi from the bus station should only cost a few bucks, but agree on the price first and be ready for the nice Albanian taxi drivers to try and rip you off.
City Hostel – Facilities
The place is heated by wood and the common room can get quite toasty in an evening. Free breakfast provided, as well as a welcome shot!
The owner is friendly to a fault and can arrange very well priced ongoing transport to other places in Macedonia as well as to Kosovo. Heating outside smoking and BBQ area.
Location wise, as well as being only 20 minutes from the centre of Skopje there are also a number of shops and cheap local restaurants within 5-10 minutes walk from the hostel.
There are now a lot of other options in Skopje, from cheaper hostels to mid-range hotels, but the great location, cool rooms, and most importantly the super friendly owner make this by far the best hostel in Skopje, and perhaps Macedonia.
Not so fun fact, after 7 pm you can’t buy booze in Skopje, so stock up well beforehand and make the most of the toasty fire, or the outside BBQ and have an impromptu Skopje party!
